Farm lesson 1: grass

The grass is the whole ground of the farm: one green over the canvas and a few small tufts. Here you draw a 64 by 40 piece of it, with the base green already in place. Then fill the whole 208 by 168 field the same way.

This sprite is wide. It's easier to draw on a computer, or with your phone turned sideways.

Step by step

Step 1: Colors

The grass after the step "colors"

The base green over the whole canvas. It is already done for you here: one bucket fill.

Step 2: Shading

The grass after the step "shading"

Add the tufts in the darker green. Three small shapes, spread thin. Leave big calm areas between them.

Step 3: Light

The grass after the step "light"

A few light pixels on top of some tufts, where the light catches the blades.

Why it looks this way

Less texture looks better here. The grass is the stage, not the actor: if every pixel moves, the sprites on top of it stop reading.

The colors

3 colors, dark to light. Pick them with the eyedropper in the trainer, or type the codes into your editor.

  • #64b42c
  • #6abe30
  • #8ecb48

Where it goes in the farm

The farm is 208 by 168 pixels. These are the top left corners of the sprite:

  • Grass: x 0, y 0
