Pixel art farm

A top-down pixel art farm: a log house, a pond, three garden beds, pine trees, a fence, chickens and a farmer on a dirt path

A whole farm for a top-down RPG, 208 by 168 pixels. Every sprite in it has its own lesson, and each lesson draws that exact sprite with you, step by step, in your browser. Do them in order and you end up with a copy of this farm, pixel for pixel.

Each lesson tells you where the sprite goes in the scene and which colors it uses. Draw the pieces on one canvas in the free pixel art editor, or download the finished farm as an .aseprite file and take it apart layer by layer.

Put it together

Make one canvas of 208 by 168 and give every sprite its own layer, with its shadow on a layer just under it. Then stack the layers by depth: the grass at the bottom, then the path and the pond, then everything that stands, the ones further back first. A sprite lower in the picture is nearer to you, so it goes on top. Each lesson lists the exact place of every copy.
